Elephanta Caves-Part 2

Another notable structure is that of “Lakulisa-Yogishwar Shiva” i.e. Shiva in meditation. Here Shiva sits cross-legged on a Padmasans or lotus Seat. The face is much damaged. But one can observe a placid expression.

My favorite is Kalyansundar Murti or marriage of Shiva and Parvati. It is much damaged , but beautifully carved. One can observe the various robes and ornaments depicted here.

One needs to take a boat from India Gate to Gharapuri  ( official name of Elephanta Island). The last boat leaves India Gate around 2:30 p.m. and the last returning boat from Elephanta is at 5:30 p.m. Though it includes a long walk from boat station and a bit of climbing, it is worth to witness these ancient marvel.

Elephanta caves

Elephanta Island is situated few miles north east of the Apollo Bunder on the Gateway of India , Mumbai , the Financial capital of India.

Perhaps Mahesh Murti is the most famous sculpture of Elephanta caves. The three faces corrsoond to the three functions of God ( Shiva) , the creation, the protection and the destruction.

Another striking sculpture is “Ravananugraha Murti”.it depicts the story how Shiva humbled the pride of The demon king Ravana. When Ravana made an attempt to uproot the Kailash Paravat, the sacred abode of Lord Shiva, Shiva pressed the mountain down with the toe of his left foot, crushing the arms as well as the pride of Ravana.
